The price of commodities especially crude oil has finally fallen, whether temporary or permanent only time will tell. However, what is interesting to note is that historically a fall in commodity prices (during the 70s and 80s) has lead to a recession. We hope that this will not happen and that Governments and Central Banks will be able to learn from the past to take the necessary measures so as to enable economies to have a controlled slow down and avoid a recession.

3rd Quarter ‘06

With the world cup drawing to a close, employers can rest assure that their employee’s sleep will be back to normal soon. The first half of the year has indeed been fast and furious, with the frantic sell-off in the regional stock markets, the no so subtle fight between the previous and current Prime Minister and the natural earth quake in Indonesia and yet again the non-natural landslide in Ampang.

2nd Quarter ‘06

It has indeed been an eventful first quarter, the overnight policy rate having been increased by Bank Negara Malaysia by 25 basis point (however fixed deposit rates have remained unchanged – no wonder the foreign banks love doing business in Malaysia), the retail price of both petrol and diesel having been increased by 30 sens and the introduction of the new National Automotive Policy and 9th Malaysian Plan.

A word of caution:- with the spread of the avian flu worldwide, it is best that you should ensure the ‘force majeure’ provision in your contract covers such an epidemic.

1st Quarter ‘06

First, we would like to wish you a Happy New Year and also we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our inaugural issue of our SGD Quarterly. As the name suggest, we will be issuing this review every three (3) months to our clients. Our intention is to update our clients on what is happening to the laws of Malaysia and legal cases or matters which we are of the view should be brought to our clients’ attention.
